The most important question: Is it safe?
Well, for almost 35 million international tourists that chose Mexico as their destination in 2016, it was quite safe. That is more tourists than what Argentina🇦🇷, Brazil🇧🇷, Chile🇨🇱 and Perú🇵🇪 received in the same year.
Mexico would not have this many visitors if it was a no-go country.
We know Mexico gets a lot of attention in the media regarding narcos and violence. We cannot say it is not happening, but we can also tell you that it is not as widespread or massive as is portrayed. Violence is not wide-spread and happens in few specific areas, which we always avoid. Recent and frequent visitors will tell you that things are easier now than they were in the past. Almost all touristic places are very safe and do not see their share of bad men. Those that do have, we avoid them. Saddly Acapulco or Sinaloa are among those affected. Though beautiful we prefer not to recomend these destinations to our travelers for the time being.
Someone told me you cannot visit Tijuana or Monterrey because they are deep in crime. Is that true?
Would you visit New Orleans, St. Louis and Detroit in the US? Or CapeT0wn in South Africa? These cities have much higher crime rates than “nasty” Tijuana or even “infamous” Juarez and few people would not venture there. Even New York Times included Detroit in its list of 52 cities to visit in 2017. And guess what? Tijuana was also on that list!
So yes, we believe it is possible and fun to visit Tijuana, Monterrey, Cancún, Guanajuato, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, even Mexico City. See a full report of crime in major cities in the world.
Chances are that you could go to Acapulco or Batopilas (a lovely colonial town in the Copper Canyon offered by other travel outlets not based in Mexico) and have a truly great time. Many Chilangos (Mexico City locals) flock to Acapulco because they know it is an amazing place. But as violence is located in certain neighborhoods of the city, we prefer not to take any odds and remain out of these places.
We are based in Mexico and have the most up-to-date info about this topic.
In fact, there are so many other beautiful and interesting places where security is good enough to spend a great time.
