There is a well-known ranking named The World’s 50 Best Restaurants by a British magazine Restaurants. If you are coming to Mexico City, then you should be excited to know that you can visit 4 of them. And Quintonil was until March 2017, the best of them all.
It’s an interesting Mexican restaurant with a new concept of modern cuisine which prides itself by using the most traditional ingredients of the Mexican cuisine harvested on the day. I visited Mexico City a few days ago so a visit to Quintonil was in my agenda.
Located in Polanco, one of wealthiest neighbourhoods of Mexico City, Quintonil is relatively small and not so luxurius compared to what you might expect to be one of the best restaurants. Being said, make sure to have a reservation. The dining has dimmed illumination which creates a romantic atmosphere. All waiters are concerned about what you need anytime.
For instance, take their recommendations for one of the house drinks to begin your culinary experience. I tried tangerine juice with mezcal, very refreshing and strong.
As starter, I asked for charred avocado tartare with escamoles and Mexican herb chips. Despite my nationality, I am a little bit ashamed to admit that I didn’t know what escamoles were until that night (ant larvae). They were delightful! My friend asked for string cheese soup and plantain. I gave a zip to it: quite delicious as well.
After the starters, we continued with our main dishes. I got turkey in recado negro sauce scented in cacao husk with fermented vegetables. My friend was suggested to ask for chuck eyes roll beef, from Durango, in pulque. Both dishes were simply and smoothly decorated, both meats were tender enough and their exclusive sauces gave them their uniqueness.
Regardless of the small portions, we were full before dessert time and I couldn’t bring myself to try any of the options. I am sure desserts were delicious as well considering the experience so far.
In a few words, now I can see why the restaurant got better and better over the last years. I was very satisfied with the whole experience. Being a small place only grants it an exclusiveness vibe that suites perfectly for special ocasions.
